she wears many hats

My darling friend Allegra came over the other day with an old suitcase filled with funny vintage pieces, the kind that can really only be worn in equally funny photographs, and we had ourselves a day of silly, girly dress-up fun. We took a zillion photos (some of which I will share soon) and these two videos. It was a Sunday to remember and made me feel like a fourteen year old in the best possible way. Cheers to my partner in crime with those big ol' doe eyes!

the chinatown affair

I won't bother explaining this video too much, although many of you clever (and oh so observant!) ladies already figured out that a certain someone had made a reappearance. And naturally we're back to our silly ways. We shot the video using this 8mm iphone app (the best $2 I've ever spent). The song is, of course, the Pink Panther theme by Henry Mancini. Prepare yourself because there will be more of these soon...

a fancy tutorial

I am utterly hopeless when it comes to doing my own hair so I'm always eager to learn from gals who have a knack for it. Shana Astrachan of Fox & Doll is basically a hair wizard with a penchant for vintage styles, and she makes me look extra super fancy in the video tutorial above. The style is a 1960's mini bouffant with a low ponytail and it's basically my dream hair. I was even able to stretch the look out over a few days with the help of some dry shampoo and my hot rollers. I think it would be fun to do a makeup tutorial next, something with an exaggerated cat eye perhaps. I have another video up my sleeve that I will share with you next week but it has nothing to do with hair or makeup or anything vintage, it's just pure silliness.

vintage shopping tour part one: haight street

Video by Claudia Escobar, Music by Jonathan Dahn

A few months ago I started planning a little video series with the lovely Claudia Escobar (who shot this closet tour video) that would feature various San Francisco neighborhoods and my favorite vintage and thrift shops. Our first collaboration features a few shops on Haight Street, which is probably my favorite destination in the city for old treasures. Aside from hating the sound of my own chipmunk voice I think it perfectly captures what my vintage shopping adventures are like, specifically all the twirling about, doing super suave moves like Going Down in an Elevator, and generally being a dweeb. I'm excited to feature other neighborhoods like Hayes Valley and the Mission in the future. A big thank you to Refinery29 for featuring the video here!

a preview

I'm excited to share these stills from an upcoming video I collaborated on with Claudia Escobar (who shot my closet tour video). I'm sure you can figure out what the theme is, but that's all I am going to give away for now! This will hopefully be only the first part of an ongoing series... that is if I can manage to keep my composure in front of the camera and not turn into the female Groucho!

blouse  j. crew
romper  vintage

A bright yellow silk blouse, a purple satin romper (!), puke green nail polish. All I need is a pair of roller skates!

P.S. You might remember that closet tour video I posted a few months ago... here is the longer edit with some lovely music and even more dumb hand gestures!

a closet tour video

(By Claudia Escobar, via the feast)

So here it is, the closet tour video. Basically several minutes of dresses galore and Donut the Cat lounging in the background looking rather fat and amazing. As comfortable as I am being photographed I still hate being in videos, so filming this made me quite nervous. I can't help but cringe hearing my own voice recorded and seeing my dumb hand gestures. But I'm sure most people can relate to that. And hey, there's nothing like a bunch of lacey vintage goodness to distract the eye!

P.S. Yes, that is Nadinoo's Untie Me Dress I'm wearing with the large bow in front!

happy valentine's day

A silly but sweet little video from Nicole's valentine party, complete with romantic slow dancing, pipe cleaner heart crowns, and lots of champagne. This was the first video I've ever made so don't judge too harshly... I figure the Beach Boys make up for any wonky editing, right? I also have many photos from the party that I will post soon. Hope you all have a lovely Valentine's Day!
