purikura happiness

An impromptu Japantown adventure the other day turned into, naturally, a purikura marathon! Isla and Annalise were my photo booth partners in crime and I made sure to subject them to the full Pika Pika experience, complete with singing along to all the J-pop songs that play loudly in each booth, putting bows on everything, and working up quite a sweat. I think we were all ready for a nap afterwards. This is serious stuff, guys.

a dress with a past

I found this amazing 1940's dress at one of my favorite antique stores in Petaluma (a small town near where I grew up). I was admiring the lovely shape and color of it when I noticed a small photograph attached to the tag of a smiling lady wearing the very same dress (and some rather awesome glasses). On the back was written "11-6-1966." I tried the dress on and it fit wonderfully, but the best part was knowing that I was also getting this little bit of history. I love that the previous owner was still wearing this frock years after she bought it. I wish every piece of vintage I found came with a photograph (or a whole scrapbook!) of whoever loved it before.

The previous owner. I wonder where she was going that day, if she wore the dress a lot, if perhaps it was her favorite...

Yeah, sometimes I have a difficult time keeping it serious. In my defense I was guzzling down coffee in between each shot and it made me want to jump around even more than usual. I found this funny silk 1970's blouse at one of my favorite thrift stores, hiding in between a bunch of ugly oversized polyester stuff. These photos don't really show off the amazing collar but believe me when I say it's the stuff that dreams are made of. In the middle of shooting a woman walked by and stared at me for such an uncomfortably and unblinkingly long time that I had to stop for a moment and stare back at her until she realized she was gawking. I'm sure my fellow bloggin' ladies have experienced similar awkward moments with strangers when shooting in a public place... it never fails to both amuse me and make me feel like a giant goon.
